IMG_0443Julie Cantrell is brave.

Are you brave enough to read her latest book? The Feathered Bone is amazing and difficult and heartbreaking and beautiful.

If you like fun romances, or meticulous historicals, or impossible-to-guess mysteries–this book may not be for you. But if you like books that challenge you and get you thinking, pick it up as soon as it releases on January 26.

Julie is the Rumplestiltskin of fiction. Remember the little guy who could spin straw into gold? That’s what Julie does. She takes pain, anguish, and unimaginable grief and spins it into pure light and love.

This story tackles issues most writers approach peripherally if at all. Things like spouse abuse, child abduction, sex trafficking, and suicide. There was one moment when I was so mad at Julie I wanted to call her and demand that she change the story. You know, the one that’s already been published.

Instead, I read faster, because I KNEW she would somehow redeem this. And she did.

That’s the takeaway I want to give you before you read The Feathered Bone. It’s hard, but the payoff is worth it. It’s strange–I wouldn’t say I enjoyed this book. But I did devour it and in the end was grateful to have experienced each and every emotion.

I think you’ll be glad, too.
