Overfilled plateWe had a lovely Thanksgiving with my husband’s family. Good conversation, too much wonderful food, people we love, and (my husband would add) football. Then home to loose-fitting pants, a walk with the dog in the cold, and a lazy evening. SO much to be thankful for. It was more than enough–way more than enough.
And I’m betting you had more than enough, too. So on this post-Thanksgiving Friday when we’re avoiding the scales and trying to decide what to do with all that leftover turkey I’d like to encourage you to find a place to share a portion of your more-than-enough.
Take some canned goods to a food kitchen. Take those clothes that, honestly, aren’t ever going to fit again and donate them to Goodwill. In the midst of the Black Friday shopping frenzy pick up an extra toy and give it a children’s charity. Shoot, wrap up a couple of slices of pumpkin pie and run them over to that neighbor who doesn’t have family close by.
My first novel, Miracle in a Dry Season, features a character who comes to the rescue during a time of drought when people are faced with going hungry. When she cooks, the food is always enough. As part of my promotions, I plan to encourage readers to support local food banks–to bring canned goods to the launch party–to drop off a bag of rice at a book signing–to help feed the hungry.
We have so much. At least, I know I do. Christmas is right around the corner. Instead of fretting over our holiday lists, lets find a way to take just a little bit of our too much and use it to make up for someone else’s not enough. And be thankful that we can.
