Tomorrow is Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday–the day we commemorate Christ’s Last Supper. There’s a scene in my book where the main character comes to understand what communion is all about for the first time. Ella’s taken the bread and the cup a hundred times before, but the implications have never broken through.
I’m afraid there are too many “Christians” sitting in church each Sunday like Ella, reciting the Lord’s Prayer, half listening to the sermon and treating communion like just another thing to get through before lunch.
This is Christ’s body–broken for YOU. This is Christ’s blood–shed for YOU. I hope, like Ella, you realize the enormity of the Last Supper and what an honor it is to be a part of that last meal each time you take communion.
Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means “commandment.” At the last supper Jesus commanded his disciples to serve one another in love and humility and to remember his sacrifice. Are you one of his disciples?
