blackberryThis past weekend I noticed that the blackberry brambles were swelling with buds and thought to myself that Blackberry Winter would likely be along any day. Well, yesterday started in the mid 40s and today the high is supposed to be 55 after a stretch of 70s and even 80s. I’ve been paying attention to this season for almost 10 years now–trying to prove or disprove the notion of Blackberry Winter. And I can attest that there is, indeed, a cold snap around the time the blackberry blossoms unfurl. Unfailingly.

Guess Grandma Jane was right.

Of course, it’s also the time of year for an abundance of other spring wildflowers. So here, to warm you on this chilly, mountain morning, is a selection I’ve captured lately. There’s Showy Orchis, Lady Slippers, Trillium, Painted Trillium, and Red Trillium. Sigh. I LOVE this time of year!
