I used to see “Jesus is my Copilot” bumper stickers. Then came the bumper stickers suggesting that Jesus might actually be the better driver.
Of course this is silly. I mean, if Jesus offered to drive I would SO let him. I don’t like driving. I like napping in the passenger seat. You know, dozing until you wake up and you’re almost wherever it is you’re going. Nice!
Except Jesus has offered to be the driving force in my life. No, he’s commanded me to let him be that driving force. And what do I do? First, I hide the keys. Then when I do let him drive, I insist on navigating. I try to show him all the great shortcuts and sometimes even apply the imaginary brake on my side of the car.
Why is it that I nap when my husband drives instead of “helping” him? (Okay, maybe I do “help” once in a while, but honestly, I’d rather sleep.) It’s because I trust him to get us where we’re going. He knows the way. He’s been there before and he’s a good driver. I have nothing to worry about. I trust him.
Uh-oh. So I trust my husband to get me where I need to go, but not Jesus? Ouch. Jesus knows where we’re going. He’s been there before. I have nothing to worry about. I know he’ll keep teaching me to trust him.
Philippians 1:6 – “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Nice analogy. Sounds like me–on both levels!
I knew you’d identify!
But whenever we are with you guys, you nearly always drive!
And just so you’ll know, I picked that verse long ago to be engraved on my tombstone.
Hey, next time I’m in WV I’m calling shotgun!
I blogged recently about the rear-view mirror. Car analogies and faith go well together. 🙂

Don’t they, though!
