Well, it’s October. I realize the first day of fall was back in September, but October is when I KNOW the seasons are changing in these Appalachian mountains. Leaves are just starting to color, the mornings require a jacket, and the sky is getting ever bluer. It’s the bittersweet time of year when the weather is perfect, nature is at her loveliest, and I know it will all soon turn to bare branches and ice.
But before we have the foliage, there are the last of the flowers to savor. Goldenrod, asters in blue and white, thistles, jewel weed, and all the lovely ditch flowers whose names I know not. Here’s a sampling from yesterday’s hike. You’ll find thistles of the flora and fauna variety mixed in there. Enjoy!
I was scrolling down, trying to think of names and then? “Thistle!!”
Seriously, your dog is smiling.
She has reason to smile–spoiled, beloved puppy.
Love that little Thistle flower! 🙂
My favorite, too!
Another vote for Thistle!
Fall in New Mexico is interesting. Warm days, cold nights, really lovely – a bit like California ‘champagne weather’. And a lot of wildflowers, too!
And the Flies of Summer finally die off. We live on open range…cows = flies. Yuck.
Here’s it’s the gnats that are blessedly gone. Not to mention the ticks. Ick.
I know, I’m a day late, but I love your fall photos! And that Thistle? What a great pic! Of course, Thistle pics can fit into any season.
Yes, she’s timeless like that.
