I LOVE spring in Appalachia! Mostly because of the gorgeous wildflowers. I’ve always enjoyed flowers but these days I’m making the effort to learn more about them. And right now it’s trillium season! For a long time I thought a trillium was a trillium–white, three crinkled petals, three green leaves–pretty.
But there is SO much variety. Here are just a few I see in the mountains where I live. Which is YOUR favorite? I think mine’s the wake robin–I love that name!
- Grandiflora Trillium–the gold standard.
- A cluster of wake robin trillium.
- A single wake robin.
- Sweet white trillium isn’t always white.
- A single sweet white trillium in a rosy shade of pink.
- This trillium is likely a cross between a white and a red or pink trillium. Check out that striped petal!
- Toadshade Trillium
- Painted Trillium
- Nodding Trillium
Thanks so much. I’ve never lived close enough to mountains to see this. Since I’m a “pink
person”, the rosy shade of pink is my favorite.
